5 Reasons to Turbocharge Your Engine

Engine receiving turbocharger

Thinking about installing a turbocharger, but haven’t made up your mind? Here are five reasons why you should do it.

1. Higher Output

Installing a turbocharger improves the output of your engine, because the power-to-weight ratio is significantly better than that of a naturally aspirated engine. A bigger engine with no turbo will add more weight, which decreases the overall output of the engine. For example, a lighter V6 engine with a turbo installed can have the same performance as a V8 engine with no turbo.

2. Less Noise

If you’re looking for more power but you don’t want your engine to be any louder than it already is, a turbocharged engine will be quieter than a normal engine that has the same output. The smaller size of the engine with the turbo allows less noise with the same amount of power as a larger, noisier engine.

3. Torque can be Improved

With a turbocharged engine, the torque can be improved because it allows a high torque increase at low speeds. Many engines experience a lot of power loss when climbing a hill, but with a turbo almost no power is lost, so a hill can be climbed with less gear changes and higher speeds.

4. More Efficient

The air in a diesel engine is compressed before the fuel is injected, and a turbocharger allows more air to be compressed. This allows more fuel to be added compared to a regular engine that is the same size and naturally aspirated. With a turbocharged engine, the smaller size saves on weight and improves fuel consumption, improving the overall efficiency of the engine.

5. Better for the Environment

As if you weren’t already convinced, adding a turbocharger can actually be better for the environment. The concept of the turbo is to recycle wasted fuel, so it allows for more efficient fuel burn and decreases the output of the excess fuel into the atmosphere by cleaning the cylinder combustion bowl and exhaust port.
