Common Problems Found In 2003-2004 Dodge Ram Diesel Trucks

Written By JD Diagnostics & Diesel Repair on Dec 11, 2019

2004 Dodge Ram

Dodge had it coming when they turned out this beaut. Thirsty off the line, you’ll be doing well to get 11 mpg out of this hog. That said, it was also one of the quickest trucks Consumer Reports ever tested. Run your truck into the ground by fixing these common problems yourself.

Weak Brakes

These monsters were sent out into the world without decent brakes. The stock brakes were one of the biggest problems with these trucks. They just weren’t up to the task of hauling at maximum capacity. If you are replacing brakes yourself, pay close attention to which side you attach the calipers on the Dodge. If you have them reversed, the bleed port will be in the wrong location. This will result in trapped air and a brake pedal that goes to the floor. Don’t skimp on quality brakes. With a truck that hauls ass and tows over 3 tons, robust brakes are essential.

Airbag Recalls

If your truck hasn’t been in the shop to get these airbag recalls fixed, now’s the time to go. Don’t mess around with these airbag recalls. These babies can rupture, potentially sending lethal metal fragments into the cabin. Don’t run the risk of being riddled with shrapnel. Take care of outstanding recalls today. Dealerships will take care of it on the house.

Problems at the Pump

The gas pump isn’t the only problem pump with these trucks. Lift pumps and water pumps are prone to fail in these vehicles before you see 100,000 km. Money’s on the lift pump to fail first. Don’t worry about damaging the CP3 during diagnostics. It’s designed to run independently of the lift pump operation. If yours is in-tank then you’ve got your work cut out for you removing it.

Let us help you correctly diagnose the problem before you get yourself in the middle of a major operation. We can take care of all your truck needs from mild to wild!
